<link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/16267</link>
<description>Analyzing the Coverage of Sport Articles in Local Newspapers: A Focus on Bekur
Neway, Mulugeta
Sport holds a prominent position as one of the main topics frequently covered in the media of our country, particularly in newspapers. The aim of this study was to investigate the coverage of sport articles in the Bekur newspaper. This newspaper was chosen due to its wide readership, with 10 thousand copies distributed weekly, and its historical significance as the first regional newspaper in the media history of Ethiopia. The research utilized quantitative content analysis to collect data from the analyzed newspaper, along with conducting in-depth interviews with a sport journalist and a sport editor from the newspaper. A sample of 50 sport articles was examined. The quantitative analysis revealed that the sports column of the newspaper predominantly focused on soccer, sportsmen, international sports, and related topics. However, the coverage of political, social, economic, and health aspects of sports, as well as issues related to sports facilities, was limited. Additionally, the majority of sport stories in the newspaper lacked proper sourcing. The interviews provided insights into the challenges faced by journalists, such as the lack of updated sport rules, regulations, and a centralized information hub, which adversely affected the acquisition of information for in-depth reporting and the support of regional and national sports. Based on the findings, this study recommends promoting equitable coverage for both genders and all types of sports. It suggests offering comprehensive sport reports that encompass political, economic, social, and health aspects, as well as ensuring proper attribution of sources to establish trust. Furthermore, organizing professional training programs to enhance the capacity of sport journalists and fostering strong relationships with sports stakeholders are suggested to support progress in the sector. By adopting these recommendations, the promotion of sports and overall development of the sector can be achieved.

Estibel, Mengistu
Twenty-first century journalism has evolved from the traditional top-down, “one-to-many" model into a process involving producers, content and audiences. This study was aimed at investigating the Facebook users’ engagement at Amhara Media Corporation. The relevant theoretical frameworks employed for the topic were new media theory, and uses and gratification theory. <link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/16265</link>
<description>Gender Represntation In Etv In The Case of Documentary Department
Shitu, Kemal
In Ethiopia, the participation of women in every sector is increasing. However, it is not as it should be in some professions. In the media sector, there is an underrepresentation of women journalists in the first and largest media institutions. The main purpose of this thesis was to find out the reasons for the underrepresentation of women in the ETV documentary department. The researcher set four main questions. Why do documentary production departments assign few female journalists? What is the proportion of female journalists in the department? What role do women journalists play in the department? How to improve participation in the department as well as in the profession of journalism? An in-depth interview and focus group discussion was conducted with women journalists, male coworkers, and other people from human resources, the team leader in the department, and the head office. The researcher has used spiral of silence and genderlect theory as theoretical frameworks. The collected data and analysis show that the number of female journalists in the documentary department was small. They are strong and hardworking, even going to war fronts and mining places to do documentaries. However, mostly women journalists are assigned to social issues, especially cultural documentaries. Societal pressure, low self-esteem, the current Ethiopian condition, and leadership problems in the country made women's participation above difficult. The study showed that the media were still male-dominated and masculine for the most part. The society, parents, educational institutions, government, female journalists, and Ethiopian media women's association were responsible for increasing women's participation in media institutions.

<title>The Framing of Inflation By The Ethiopian Print Media: The Case of Bekur And Reporter Newspapers</title>
<link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/16264</link>
<description>The Framing of Inflation By The Ethiopian Print Media: The Case of Bekur And Reporter Newspapers
Elias, Mulat
This research was conducted with the principal motive of examining the media farming of the 2022 inflation. The study focused on two media outlets namely; Bekur and Reporter newspapers were selected. The examination which covered time frame from January 2022 to December 2022 dominantly used quantitative content analysis and textual analysis. Theme, frames, sources, and media functions were the key elements the study applied to get the most legitimate information for deciding the direction of those media. Findings revealed that Beku and Reporter framing of the issue were significantly different. The local media (Bekur) reports were centered on the issue portraying those who are affected by inflation and focus on showing the magnitude of the problem. Other dominant themes include measures undertake to solve the problem less attention given to government action of reducing inflation as a theme, Reporters ‟s major themes were government action and attribution of responsibility the crisis. Bekur downplayed especially government action theme by giving less emphasis. Being different in the topic of interest, the two media apparently used different sources. Government officials were frequently used in Reporter. On the other hand, becide its dominant sources to be affected people family and opposition groups. Reporter focused on defining the problem as main media function. On the other hand, Bekur focused on suggesting solution. The key reason for experiencing great deal of distinction in framing is their difference in editorial guideline and orientation of media philosophy. In the finding, the researcher learned that the media should have a guide line to cover the newspapers lacks this commitment and codes of conduct. Therefore, it should revise its editorial policy and other governing principles and media philosophies so as to effectively address economic issue, as it is the central point of journalism. The knowledge gap experienced by reporters on issue of inflation has contributed for the incompleteness of information on the issue. The lack on the part of the reporters to have basic understanding of economic issues contributed to the other failure to show the real cause of inflation and inform the solution.
