<description>The Impact of Rural Saving and Credit Cooperative On Multidimensional Poverty Status: The Case Of Households In Awabel District, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Tegegne, Yeshiwas Ewinetu
Multidimensional poverty is the problem of every country in the world; hence, it needs the attention of policymakers and various development actors. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of saving and credit cooperative financial service on multidimensional poverty status of rural household in Awabel district. The study is based on three objectives, that is, to examine the impact of saving and credit cooperative financial service on multidimensional poverty status of rural households, to identify determinants of multidimensional poverty status of rural households, to identify the dimension of household poverty affected by saving and credit cooperatives financial services. &#13;
The study adopts a cross sectional, and quantitative research design. The target population was 4,675 actively registered RuSACCO members households .The sample size was a total of 380 i.e190 members as a treated group and 190 nonmembers as counterfactual obtained through multi-stage sampling techniques .The data is primary data collected through household survey .&#13;
For data analysis firstly, binary logit models is used to identify the determinants of multidimensional poverty status of rural households; and the finding revealed multidimensional poverty status of rural household has negative relationship between RuSACCO membership status (-4.2%), size of cultivated landholdings (-5%), access for agricultural extension service (-4.01%), and access for road (-1.7%) and are all statistically significant at 1% level. moreover, there was a negative relationship between experience of household head on agricultural activity (-0.15%) and statistically significant at 5% level, the risen in educational status of household head from illiterate to literate, primary to secondary and from secondary to higher education goes dawn multidimensional poverty status by-1.8%, -3% and -4.3% and all are statistically significance at 1% level . It is also found that, there were positive relationship between, multidimensional poverty status of rural households and dependency ratio (0.11%) at 5% level of significance) in Awabel district. &#13;
Secondly , propensity score match model is applied to examine the impact of RuSACCO financial service on multidimensional poverty status of rural households, and the finding revealed that, financial service of RuSACCO had reduce the multidimensional poverty index of rural household by 0.082898018 on average for members   . &#13;
The findings also showed that the RuSACCOs financial service has reduced health dimension of poverty by 0.036242775, the educational dimension of poverty by 0.018915905 standard of living dimension of poverty by 0.0152, on average for RuSACCO members. &#13;
 It is recommended the government should give special attention for organization and promotion of cooperative. Cooperative extension workers should advice members of RuSACCO to spend their financial service on health, education and standard of livings respectively. Increase productivity per size of cultivated landholding, work hard to bring literate farmers, work against reducing young age dependency, rising road accessibility, increase the accessibility of agricultural extension workers, and experience sharing among farmers to reduce the multidimensional status of rural household’s members in Awabe district.

<title>The Impact of Conflict on Multidimensional Child Poverty in North Wollo Zone, Amhara Region: Focus On Raya Kobo</title>
<link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/15753</link>
<description>The Impact of Conflict on Multidimensional Child Poverty in North Wollo Zone, Amhara Region: Focus On Raya Kobo
TEGENE, MEZGEB
It is widely understood that poverty and armed conflict are interrelated; with poverty making countries more prone to armed conflict, and conflict weakening economic growth and development. This study used micro-survey data to study how the children are poor multidimensionally following the armed conflicts in northern Ethiopia. Specifically, using the propensity score matching method, this study investigates the impact of armed conflict on each dimension of multidimensional poverty of children in Kobo town, North Wollo zone of Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. The result shows that, the multidimensional child poverty index (MPI) in the conflict-affected area was 55.2%, with 94.1% incidence and 58.7% intensity of multidimensional poverty. In the non-affected area, child MPI was estimated to be 24%, with a 54% incidence and 44.5% intensity. The education dimension is the most important contributor to child poverty of conflict-affected area. The results of the logistic regression also revealed that family size and number of dependents have significant and positive triggers of child multidimensional poverty. The result indicated that the armed conflict has a positive and significant impact on multidimensional poverty of children in the study area, with substantial impact on the child security dimensions followed by education and living standard dimensions. The average treatment effect on the treated measured by nearest neighbor matching shows that children who were found in conflict zone are 32.6% more deprived as compared to those who were not affected by the conflict directly. The findings of our study suggested that the post-conflict intervention should give priority to the child security dimensions followed by education and living standard dimensions of poverty.

<title>The Impacts of Village Saving and Loan Association on Women’s Economic Empowerment in East Belessa Woreda.</title>
<link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/15752</link>
<description>The Impacts of Village Saving and Loan Association on Women’s Economic Empowerment in East Belessa Woreda.
Shumye, Worku
VSLA is an informal microfinance serving as an alternative source of finance&#13;
for poor individuals, especially women. CARE Ethiopia was implementing&#13;
women-centered village savings and loan associations (VSLA) in East Belessa&#13;
Woreda. Empirical studies on the impact of VSLA on women's economic&#13;
empowerment are insufficient. In addition, existing studies did not use&#13;
appropriate sampling and impact evaluation methods. Thus, the main objective&#13;
of this study was to evaluate the impacts of VSLA on women's economic&#13;
empowerment.  The paper used personal savings, personal annual income, and&#13;
asset ownership and control indicators to measure women's economic&#13;
empowerment in East Belessa Woreda, Amhara region, Ethiopia. A quasiexperimental&#13;
&#13;
impact analysis method called propensity score matching was&#13;
applied using cross-sectional data collected from a randomly selected 184&#13;
VSLA members and 200 non-member sample women. The finding reveals&#13;
religion, household head, respondent's level of education, membership of other&#13;
MFI, and participation in extension service have a positive and significantly&#13;
affected likelihood of women joining VSLA. On the other hand, age and&#13;
household size have significantly and negatively affected. Propensity score&#13;
matching results show that VSLA positively and significantly impacted women's&#13;
personal cash savings, asset ownership and control, and annual income.&#13;
Relative to non-member women, respectively, VSLA member women have&#13;
additional personal cash savings, asset ownership, and personal income with&#13;
ATT values 5510.716, 10251.617, and 7408.99. This indicates that VSLA&#13;
positively and significantly impacted women's economic empowerment in the&#13;
study area. So, the government and non-governmental organizations should&#13;
allocate a budget to expand the village savings and loan association and make&#13;
it accessible to women. It should prepare rules, laws, guidelines, and strategies&#13;
to implement VSLAs and give them to the implementing bodies. Should pay&#13;
special attention to promoting, implementing, monitoring, and increasing the&#13;
awareness of women about VSLA.

<title>Impacts of Participating in Avocado Production on Smallholder Farmers’ Income: the Case of North Mecha Woreda, Amhara Region, Ethiopia</title>
<link>http://ir.bdu.edu.et/handle/123456789/15320</link>
<description>Impacts of Participating in Avocado Production on Smallholder Farmers’ Income: the Case of North Mecha Woreda, Amhara Region, Ethiopia
Fente, Addisu
Over the past 20 years, Ethiopia has made significant economic growth. Yet statistics reveal that&#13;
the agriculture sector has the lowest growth in the nation, which is caused by a lack of&#13;
investment in agricultural technology, reliance on rainfall, lack of availability and poor quality of&#13;
seeds and fertilizers, as well as a lack of adequate rules and guidelines. As a result, farm&#13;
households in rural areas have very poor incomes. A quasi-experimental method is employed to&#13;
examine the impacts of participating in avocado production on smallholder farmers‟ income in&#13;
North Mecha Woreda of Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. In 2022, a household-level survey&#13;
is carried out on a sample of 360 households, 180 of which were treated as participating farmers&#13;
in avocado production while the other 180 served as the control group. A logit model is also used&#13;
to determine the variables affecting smallholder farmers' participation in avocado production.&#13;
The propensity score matching (PSM) analysis results revealed that participating in avocado&#13;
production has a significant positive impact on smallholder farmers‟ total income. That is,&#13;
participating in avocado production has significantly increased the income of the treated group&#13;
by 22.8% as compared to the control group. In accordance with the logit model analysis results,&#13;
while market distance had a negative impact on farmers' participation in avocado production,&#13;
better access to irrigation, extension services, training, avocado seedlings, large livestock&#13;
holdings, the size of cultivable land, and the educational level of the household head had a&#13;
positive impact. This study finding suggests that scaling up the practices of avocado producers in&#13;
the Amhara region in particular and in Ethiopia at large has a significant role in enhancing the&#13;
total income of the smallholder farmers. Thus, concerns should be given to the possible&#13;
influencing factors that affect the participation of smallholder farmers in avocado production.
